For the Deep, phase 1

2008
Inkjet prints, aluminum and paper
12'x14'

The piece is derived from 3-D Bathymetric maps of the Arctic Ocean sea floor that are being made to support the UN treaty, The Law of the Sea. As part of my project, For the Deep, I traveled to the Arctic on board a US Coast Guard icebreaker on a mapping expedition. I took the 3-d bathymetric maps generated on this expedition and “unfolded them” into a pattern that could be used to reconstruct areas of the seafloor in 3 dimensions by cutting and folding. This workis an exploded view of this form.
