Over the past several years, Adriane Colburn has developed a series of installations that seek to illuminate changes in the infrastructure and networks of natural and urban landscapes by reimagining maps. These constructions, comprised of layers of hand cut paper, metal, photographs and projected light, focus on unseen systems that exist below ground or are shielded by scale or the passage of time. To create these works, she goes through a process of elimination, editing out all visual information about a subject except a minute selection that becomes illuminated. She does this through physical removal, cutting out everything except imperative lines, thus creating images and abstractions that are informed by voids as much as by positive marks.
